Laguna Garzón shore walk with kids

Family activity · July 12, 2026

Walking along the shore of Laguna Garzón is one of the simplest things you can do with kids in the area: it is free, possible all year round, and needs no operator or booking. On the Rocha side, near the circular bridge, the shoreline is low and the water calm — perfect for small children to play while the adults watch birds. One to two hours is plenty, and it works for all ages.

What to do

The plan is simple: walk slowly along the sandy shore, keep an eye on the water and see what shows up. Laguna Garzón is a protected area and a well-known bird-watching spot: with a little patience you can see black-necked swans, flamingos, herons and coots, especially along the quiet stretches away from the traffic. If your kids get hooked, the portal has a dedicated page on bird watching with kids.

For younger children the walk becomes a game: looking for tracks in the sand, counting birds, watching the reeds and the gulls overhead. Bring binoculars if you have them — even a basic pair changes the experience. Since this is a protected area, the rule is look but don't take: nothing gets collected as a souvenir, and all rubbish goes back with you.

Where

The most comfortable stretch for families is the shore on the Rocha side, near the circular bridge on Route 10. The coast there is low, open and easy to walk, and you can park close to the bridge accesses. From that point you can follow the shoreline away from the road for as long as the group feels like, then return the same way.

The lagoon separates the departments of Maldonado and Rocha, and the landscape is wide open on both sides. The portal's page on the Garzón Lagoon gives you more background on the place, the bridge and how to get there.

When

All year round. In summer it is best to go early in the morning or towards sunset, when the sun is gentler and there are usually fewer people around. In autumn and winter the walk is nicest around midday, with warm clothing: on clear winter days the lagoon tends to be still and full of bird activity.

If you visit in the low season, the winter guide to José Ignacio and Laguna Garzón helps you plan the rest of your day in the area.

Tips for going with kids

Bring water for everyone, a hat and sunscreen in summer, and a windproof jacket in winter. Wear shoes that can get wet: parts of the shore are damp, and kids will find it hard not to step in. The walk stays on the shore, without going into deep water; with that rule made clear, it is a safe activity for all ages.

Allow one to two hours, stops included. Remember this is a protected area: whatever you find stays where it is, and no litter is left behind. If afterwards you want a beach with more services, check the area's safe beaches for children.
