Few brands say eastern-coast summer quite like Medialunas Calentitas, "the originals from Punta del Este". Its outpost at Ruta 10 km 183.5 is one of the chain's three stops in the east, alongside those in La Barra and Solanas, and it sits strategically on the road into José Ignacio: impossible to drive past without someone asking to pull over.
The ritual is a familiar one: medialunas fresh from the oven, made with lard or butter, with coffee for the road or by the dozen to take to the beach or the house. It is the perfect stop for a late breakfast before settling into the sand, or the afternoon treat on the way back as the sun goes down. Simple, delicious and no fuss, as a classic should be.
