It is small-town dining with a long season: several listings present themselves as summer beach restaurants (one runs for "a few weeks a year") while others say they are open year-round. The portal publishes no menus or reviews; each listing says what the kitchen does, where it is and how to get in touch, and any hours on a listing are worth confirming before you go, especially off season.
Where to find what
José Ignacio holds 37 of the 57 places. On the sand are the beach restaurants and paradores: Parador La Huella, La Susana on the Mansa, El Chiringo and the Playa Brava beach club, Parador La Choza de Mar and Francis Mallmann's Chiringuito on the dunes. In and around the village, the seafood cooking of Tato Pescador, Cantina de Mar and Popei, and the chef-led kitchens of Namm, Shelter, Marismo among the pines and Cruz del Sur Cocina in the heart of the village. La Juanita adds 11, among them Tres, La Olada and Juana Cocina Bar. On Laguna Garzón there are five, with La Virazón a few steps from the bridge and Garza Mora, the restaurant of the floating lodge, with a terrace over the lagoon. Pueblo Garzón closes the list with four: Francis Mallmann's Restaurante Garzón, the Bodega Garzón restaurant, the café La Pulpería and Compañía Uruguaya de Vinos de Mar.
Breakfast, afternoon snacks and something quick
For the first hour of the day and the afternoon, the list has its regulars: the sourdough Panadería José Ignacio on Ruta 10, Medialunas Calentitas on the same road, La Excusa with speciality coffee and a garden, the summer Café de Playa and the Freddo ice-cream parlour in the middle of the village. In La Juanita, Rizoma combines a bookshop, café and ceramics workshop among the pines, and Al Pan, Pan bakes sourdough. For something quick: the chivitos and pizza at Malabar, the Neapolitan pizza at Flama in La Juanita and at Napule Notte in Arenas de José Ignacio.
