Anniversary of José Ignacio
The official date of the lighthouse and the history of the resort.
The Municipality of Garzón received a proposal to set the official anniversary date of the Faro de José Ignacio resort. The debate centres on three historic milestones: 1877 (first documented settlement and lighthouse lighting), 1907 (land purchase) or 1909 (resort plan).
On 1 June 2027 the José Ignacio lighthouse will mark 150 years of continuous operation, a symbol of Uruguay’s east coast. The area is part of what we know today as Laguna Garzón and its surroundings, a destination for nature and tranquillity.
Setting the anniversary will allow the resort to celebrate its identity consistently and strengthen its tourist and historic value. More news from the area in our News section.
