Sleeping with a dog near José Ignacio is not impossible, but it is not the default either: most inns and hotels around here do not take animals, and the ones that do often fail to say so in the listing. Right now the portal has three places with a stated pet policy, one in each area.

The three with a stated policy

La Posadita, in La Juanita, is the most natural choice for coming with a dog: a small family-run place with a pool and deck, a barbecue in the garden and free bikes, with units ranging from a standard double to lofts, duplexes and a separate bungalow. Several have their own kitchen, which solves the nights when you would rather not leave the dog alone to go out for dinner.

Hotel Garzón, in the village itself, plays in another league: open-fire restaurant, full board with wine, pool and garden. It also takes pets. It is about twenty minutes from the lagoon, and the village dirt roads are some of the best afternoon walks around here: no traffic and the shade of old trees.

Laguna Garzón Lodge describes itself as pet friendly and sits right on the lagoon, with its own restaurant, kayaks, canoes, bikes and birdwatching. The catch is the calendar: it only runs in season, January to April and in November.

What to ask when you book

“Pets allowed” almost never means “any animal, under any condition”. The five questions that spare you an awkward moment at check-in:

  • Is there a weight or number limit? That is the most common restriction.
  • Is there a nightly fee? Several charge a separate cleaning fee.
  • Can the dog stay alone in the room? Many places forbid it, and that shapes your whole dinner plan.
  • Where is the dog allowed? Garden and deck are usually yes; pool, dining room and common areas, almost always no.
  • Which room will I get? There are usually assigned units, generally on the ground floor with a door to the outside.

Holiday rentals are their own story

A good share of the beds around here are holiday rentals, and there the answer depends on the owner, not on a policy. Ask in writing before you pay the deposit, even if the listing says nothing: the absence of an explicit ban does not mean it is allowed, and nobody wins that argument after a three-hour drive.
