Yes, you can get to José Ignacio and Laguna Garzón by public bus, and the portal's directory has three bus listings to start from: COPSA's Línea Este, which links Montevideo and Carrasco airport with the coast; COT, with services from Montevideo, Piriápolis and Punta del Este; and CODESA's line 14, the local line that runs up the coast from Maldonado on Ruta 10. All of them stop on the main road, Ruta 10, and none stops on the circular bridge or goes on to Pueblo Garzón. Two things to know before you board: the Maldonado department government, in the notices that accompany its summer resolutions, names five local lines serving the village, not one, and for the last two summers it has banned buses from the village centre between 11 am and 9 pm, so they drop passengers at the ANTEL office instead. Timetables are not in this guide: they change by season and live on each company's website.

Before you read on: departamentos, Intendencias and two kinds of bus

Uruguay is divided into departamentos, each with its own departmental government, whose executive is the Intendencia. José Ignacio, La Juanita and the western shore of the lagoon are in the departamento of Maldonado; the far shore, with El Caracol, is in Rocha. That matters for buses because there are two systems. Departmental lines (líneas departamentales) are regulated by the Intendencia and run inside one departamento: line 14 from Maldonado city to José Ignacio is one. Interdepartmental lines (interdepartamentales) are the long-distance coaches between departamentos, such as COT and COPSA from Montevideo. When the Intendencia de Maldonado publishes a resolution about buses in José Ignacio, it binds both kinds. The official name you will see in those documents is "Balneario Faro de José Ignacio"; faro means lighthouse, and the lighthouse square is where the local line ends.

From Carrasco airport and Montevideo: COPSA and COT

If you fly into Montevideo's Carrasco airport, the listing to look at is COPSA's Línea Este. According to the listing, the line "connects Montevideo and Carrasco airport with the coast, with stops in José Ignacio and Laguna Garzón on a good part of its daily services", about thirty services a day, with the timetable valid since March 2026 on the company's website. COT, according to its listing, has services from Montevideo, Piriápolis and Punta del Este with a stop in José Ignacio and Laguna Garzón, with tickets and timetables on cot.com.uy. From the airport to José Ignacio is about 180 kilometres, a distance the portal takes from the listing of LPTUR, one of the transfer companies in the taxis and transfers selection, which compares the pre-booked alternatives for the same leg if you land at an hour with no bus.

Along the coast from Maldonado and Punta del Este: CODESA line 14

Line 14 is the local bus that, according to its listing, links Maldonado, Punta del Este, La Barra, Manantiales and Balneario Buenos Aires with José Ignacio and Laguna Garzón, stopping on Ruta 10. CODESA publishes the route on its site in two dated versions: a winter route "from March to December each year" and a summer route "from December to March each year". Both leave from the company's Maldonado office, call at the Maldonado and Punta del Este bus terminals, cross the Leonel Viera bridge to La Barra and follow Ruta 10 through Manantiales and Balneario Buenos Aires; in summer the published route makes a detour through other streets between that bridge and Ruta 10. At the end it leaves the main road and enters the village along Camino E. Saiz Martínez, Los Cisnes and Los Teros, finishing at Plaza José Ignacio, the lighthouse square.

One caveat if your destination is the lagoon rather than the village: the detailed route CODESA publishes ends at the square, while the portal's listing also states a stop at Laguna Garzón. Confirm with the company that the specific service you take continues to the lagoon. The listing also notes that timetables "are updated by season and published on the company's website"; the portal does not reproduce them.

A second CODESA line was announced from the other side. In November 2022 the Intendencia de Maldonado announced a new San Carlos – José Ignacio service starting on 1 December that year, running from Vialidad in San Carlos through that town's centre and terminal, then along Ruta 9, Ruta 104 and Camino Medellín to Ruta 10, and into the village by Camino Sainz Martínez to the lighthouse square. At launch the Intendencia published three departures each way (7:30, 11:40 and 17:00 from Vialidad; 8:40, 12:50 and 18:10 from the square). Those are the 2022 launch times, quoted here only to show the frequency it started with; ask CODESA for the current ones. The portal has no 2026 source confirming that the line is still running, so check with CODESA before counting on it.

The summer rule: between 11 am and 9 pm, buses stop at the ANTEL office

Each summer the Intendencia de Maldonado changes departmental bus routes by resolution, and for the last two seasons the measure for José Ignacio has been the same. Its notice of 2 December 2024 said that lines 14, 35 and 45 (CODESA), 42 (MICRO LTDA.) and 25 (MACHADO), "as well as the interdepartmental lines, may not enter the urbanised centre of Balneario Faro de José Ignacio between 11 and 21 hours and must cut their routes at the ANTEL office", that time from 2 December 2024 to 31 January 2025. For the 2025-26 summer the routes were set in Resolution 10862/2025, according to the Intendencia's notice of 30 January 2026, and in a notice of the same day the Intendencia reported that it had resolved to extend the ban "until 28 February 2026" by Resolution 00897/2026, citing "the large influx of visitors and the success of the summer season" and the traffic it brings to José Ignacio. Both resolutions are linked under Sources.

In practice: in high season, if your bus reaches the village between 11 am and 9 pm, you get off at the ANTEL office (ANTEL is a telecoms company; its office is the cut-off point the resolutions name) and continue on foot or by taxi; early in the morning and at night, the full route to the square applies. The rule is set by a new resolution each year with its own dates. As of 10 October 2026 the Intendencia had not yet published the one for the 2026-27 season, so if you travel in December check the news section of maldonado.gub.uy or ask the company. This guide will be updated when it appears. Remember the seasons are reversed from the northern hemisphere: high season here is December to February.

Where you get off: Ruta 10 kilometre by kilometre

The portal's kilometre-by-kilometre guide to Ruta 10, built from the addresses in the listings, is the best map for a bus passenger. Before the village comes La Juanita, the service strip between km 181 and km 183.5, with the ANCAP petrol station (open 24 hours, according to its listing) and the Redpagos payment agency at km 183.5. José Ignacio itself is km 185 to 185.5, where line 14 leaves the road for the square. From there the guide counts four and a half kilometres to km 190, where the Rocha shore begins, with the lagoon and the bridge in between. There is no bus stop on the bridge: the circular bridge guide says so and advises confirming with the interdepartmental companies where they stop. All three bus listings state a stop at "Laguna Garzón" without a kilometre or a corner, so ask the company exactly where it drops you. Beyond the bridge, at El Caracol and the Rocha beaches, no listing in the portal declares a bus stop. And inland to Pueblo Garzón, which the Intendencia places "a little over 30 kilometres from José Ignacio", there is no public transport according to the taxis and transfers selection: that leg is by car or pre-booked remise.

The last stretch, and a note on tickets

From the stop on Ruta 10 to your accommodation there is usually a gap, especially if you get off in La Juanita or at the lagoon. The listing for the José Ignacio taxi and remise service has the direct contact, and the taxis and transfers selection groups the pre-booked transfers and car hire. The portal has no verified information on fares or payment methods for any of the lines; the COT and COPSA listings point to the companies' websites for tickets and timetables, and that is where to check whether you can buy online before travelling.

Landing outside bus hours

If your flight reaches Carrasco at an hour with no suitable service, the portal's directory has one listing that declares 24-hour service for that leg: LPTUR, which according to its listing offers 24-hour transfers from Carrasco airport to José Ignacio and Laguna Garzón, with vehicles from a three-seat remise to a 46-seat coach. The portal has not verified its fares; booking is through the contact on its listing, and the other pre-booked options are compared in the taxis and transfers selection.

How we checked. On 10 October 2026 the editorial team counted the service listings in the Spanish directory (83, of which 3 are buses) and read the listings linked here, which reproduce what each company states; the portal did not call anyone. The same day it opened the line 14 route on CODESA's website and, on the Intendencia de Maldonado's website, the notice of the new San Carlos – José Ignacio line (21 November 2022), the summer routes notice (2 December 2024) and the extension notice (30 January 2026), which links to Resolutions 10862/2025 and 00897/2026 as PDFs; the dates and lines quoted in this guide are those in the text of the notices. Quotations from those Spanish-language sources are the team's translations. Kilometre marks come from the portal's Ruta 10 guide, which takes them from listing addresses.
