If you want to be outdoors without getting into the water, this page brings together eight listings for outings on horseback, on foot, by bike or in the air between Laguna Garzón, José Ignacio and Pueblo Garzón. On horseback, the rides run by Discover Laguna Garzón are based at La Playita at El Caracol, on the Rocha side of the lagoon, and Haras Godiva, in José Ignacio, rides along the beaches towards the village; on foot, the guided walks in the protected area cover 5 kilometres in two hours; and in the air, the paraglider flight takes off from the lagoon and loops around the lighthouse. This page sorts what those listings publish: where each outing starts, how long it takes, what season it declares and what you need to arrange first. Prices are not repeated here: some listings publish them, some refer you to the operator and some do not mention them.
Before you go: spring in October, bookings by message and what La Playita is
Uruguay is in the southern hemisphere, so October is spring and the summer high season runs from December to February, according to the portal's page on José Ignacio. For several of these outings the meeting point is confirmed only when you book, usually by WhatsApp from the button on each listing. "La Playita" (the little beach) is the lagoon-side beach at El Caracol, on the Rocha shore, and the base for two of the operators below. "Área protegida" means the lagoon is part of Uruguay's national system of protected areas: the Ministry of the Environment describes it as a habitat and species management area of almost 37,000 hectares on the border of the Maldonado and Rocha departments, with a director, three permanent rangers and extra rangers hired for the summer season. Some listings quote their prices in Uruguayan pesos and some in US dollars; the portal does not reproduce either.
What the directory shows: twelve listings on foot, horseback, bike or in the air out of 65
The portal's activities index holds 65 listings. Twelve describe an outing on foot, on horseback, by bike or in the air: three on horseback (Cabalgatas por la Laguna Garzón, Huellas Cabalgatas and Haras Godiva), six on foot (the guided walks, the birdwatching walk, Ecoturismo Laguna Garzón, the Bodega Garzón trail, Cerro Catedral and the bridge walkways), one by bike, one in the air (the paraglider) and the climb up the José Ignacio lighthouse. Eight get their own section on this page; the birdwatching walk, Cerro Catedral and the lighthouse come up where they belong, and the walkways, a 20 to 30 minute stroll around the ring of the bridge, have their own listing. Seven of the twelve publish a duration, from 20 minutes (the walkways) to half a day (Cerro Catedral). Five say they run all year: the Discover rides, the birdwatching walk, Ecoturismo Laguna Garzón, Cerro Catedral and the walkways. Two name the languages they work in, and three warn that the outing depends on the weather. Three publish specific days or times: Haras Godiva its summer departure times, the winery trail Wednesday to Sunday with a time chosen when booking, and the paraglider every day, weather permitting. The Discover rides, Huellas Cabalgatas and the guided walks arrange the meeting point when you book or when your place is confirmed; Cerro Catedral and the walkways need no booking.
Getting there: Route 10 east from José Ignacio, Route 9 inland to the winery
Three bases organise the map. The first is La Playita at El Caracol, on the Rocha shore of the lagoon: the Discover Laguna Garzón rides are based there, and Ecoturismo Laguna Garzón sits on Route 10 at kilometre 193. Rocha's tourism office describes El Caracol as a resort on the shore of Laguna Garzón, immediately after crossing the new bridge: from José Ignacio, which the portal's village page puts some 40 km from Punta del Este along Route 10, you keep driving east (the kilometre markers increase in that direction, according to the portal's Route 10 guide), cross the circular bridge and you are in Rocha. The second base is Route 9: the Bodega Garzón trail starts at the winery reception at kilometre 175, in Pueblo Garzón, a village the portal's page places under an hour from the coast. The third is José Ignacio itself: Haras Godiva sits between the beach and the lagoon surroundings, and the lighthouse stands on the tip of the peninsula between Playa Mansa and Playa Brava. The paraglider takes off from the lagoon, and Huellas Cabalgatas is listed as 15 minutes from José Ignacio with a meeting point to be arranged. The portal's Pueblo Garzón page notes there is no public transport to the village, so for the winery count on a car or a transfer: the guide to taxis, transfers and car rental lists the operators with a listing.
Cabalgatas por la Laguna Garzón (Discover Laguna Garzón, La Playita at El Caracol)
Rides around the lagoon for all levels of experience, and, for experienced riders, longer outings reaching as far as Laguna de Rocha, according to the listing. They are run by Discover Laguna Garzón, a family that lives in the area all year, based at La Playita at El Caracol, where picnics with local produce are also offered. The operator works in Spanish, English, German and French; where to meet and how to get there are agreed on booking, and the outing depends entirely on the weather. The listing states all year. Book through the Laguna Garzón horse rides listing; the operator also has its own listing with its other outings.
Huellas Cabalgatas (Laguna Garzón, 15 minutes from José Ignacio)
Guided two-hour rides along the lagoon, the riverside woodland and the bird areas, for all levels and with brunch included, according to the listing. Each ride is put together to order, with kayaking as an optional add-on; meeting point and price are settled when you book. More on the Huellas Cabalgatas listing.
Haras Godiva (José Ignacio)
An equestrian centre founded in 2005, on more than 30 hectares, with a string of some 40 purebred horses (Arabians, Criollos, Hanoverians and Lusitanos among them), according to its own listing. Its speciality is coastal outings lasting between ninety minutes and two hours, with at most ten riders per group, heading for the village, passing along the beaches and coming back through the dunes and the lagoon surroundings. Of the three horse listings it is the one that publishes departure times: in summer they set off at 10 am and again between 4 and 5 pm. It has a Horse Bar for afterwards and also works English riding disciplines (dressage and show jumping). Contact through the Haras Godiva listing.
Guided walks in the protected area (Laguna Garzón)
A guided walk through the protected area with local guides: native trails, a reading of the lagoon's habitats and good-practice guidelines, according to the listing. The route is 5 kilometres, physically undemanding, and takes 2 hours in all; the meeting point is given when your place is confirmed, and the listing publishes a price per person. For the same kind of outing with a focus on birds, the birdwatching listing, run by Discover Laguna Garzón, describes a low-difficulty 3-hour trek, all year. More on the guided walks listing.
Ecoturismo Laguna Garzón (La Playita, Route 10 km 193)
An operator at La Playita, on Route 10 at kilometre 193, whose listing offers interpretive hiking on native trails, water routes, birdwatching, forest bathing, environmental education and inclusive hiking for people with disabilities. The team presents itself as certified nature guides specialising in astronomy and ornithology, with a good-practice certification from the Ministry of the Environment. It runs all year, with group outings and open calls, and works in Spanish, Portuguese and English: together with the Discover rides, it is one of only two listings here that name languages. More on the Ecoturismo Laguna Garzón listing.
The Bodega Garzón trail (Route 9 km 175, Pueblo Garzón)
An outing without a guide: a self-guided trail of about 2 hours through vineyards, olive groves and native woodland on the winery's estate, with interpretive signage, a map, binoculars, a radio and a snack included, according to the listing. The intensity is moderate and minors must be accompanied by an adult. It is available Wednesday to Sunday, with a time chosen when booking, in groups of 2 to 10; book at least 24 hours ahead, with free cancellation up to 24 hours before, and on rainy days the activity may be suspended. The starting point is the winery reception, and the listing publishes the price. More on the Bodega Garzón trail listing. For a higher climb, Cerro Catedral, north of Garzón, is free to walk all year, with no services or operators on site, according to its listing.
Cycling routes (Laguna Garzón, La Juanita and Garzón)
According to the listing, you can ride on Route 10 (with care), on dirt roads and on circuits linking the lagoon with the villages; a classic loop is to ride around the lagoon or do the La Juanita–bridge–Garzón stretch. In high season there is more traffic on Route 10 and the back roads are quieter, the same listing warns. Bikes are rented at El Caracol and from other lagoon operators; the kayak and bike rental listing names Discover Laguna Garzón and Laguna Garzón Lodge. More on the cycling routes listing.
Paraglider flight (take-off at Laguna Garzón)
Run by Paraíso Garzón: it takes off from the lagoon and flies over the countryside, José Ignacio and the lighthouse before returning along the beach, according to the listing; in season, the operator says, whales are sometimes seen from the air. Flights run every day and depend entirely on the weather: you fly in light wind. The passenger may not weigh more than 120 kg, the meeting point is Laguna Garzón, and warm clothing is advised (the operator provides suits to wear on top). The listing publishes the price. More on the paraglider flight listing. For a high view without flying, the climb up the José Ignacio lighthouse (an 1877 lighthouse, 150 steps) is possible when it is open to the public, with hours that vary with the season and the Navy's operations, according to its listing.

How we chose
We started from the 65 listings in the activities index and kept those that describe an outing on foot, on horseback, by bike or in the air with enough detail (where it starts, what it includes, what conditions it sets). Water outings (kayak, SUP, sailing, kite, surf and fishing) were left out (the first two have their own kayak and SUP guide), and so were the polo and golf clubs; the full overview of experiences is in the Laguna Garzón experiences guide. The order follows the type of outing and then the geographical base. It is not a ranking: the portal does not rate operators or compare prices, and fees stay on each listing. No operator paid to be on this list: the portal does not charge for a place in its guides, and any future sponsorship would be flagged as such in this very section.

Durations, conditions and meeting points are those each operator publishes on its listing; the portal has not confirmed them with the operators, so ask when you book.
