Where
For the lagoon option, the easiest stretch is the shore on the Rocha side, near the Route 10 circular bridge, where you can park close to the bridge access points. It's been a protected area since 2014, so the rule is simple: whatever you bring in, you bring back out, with no litter and nothing collected from the site (more on this in the Laguna Garzón protected area page). For the beach option, Playa Mansa is in José Ignacio, a few minutes over the bridge, and it's the beach local families choose most often for its gentler waves (covered in the safe beaches for kids piece). If you'd rather buy the picnic in José Ignacio, Panadería José Ignacio, on Route 10 at km 182.5, is open every day from 8 am to 7 pm and stocks sourdough bread, focaccia and pastries that are practically built for the beach.
When
A picnic works year-round, but the plan changes with the season. In summer, go early in the morning or later in the afternoon, when the sun is less intense and there's more shade around; the lagoon shore has little natural shade, so bring your own umbrella or awning there. In fall and winter, a picnic is best around midday, with a jacket on hand and fewer people around: those are the best days for the lagoon option, with the bonus of more bird activity.
Tips for going with kids
Bring water for everyone, sunscreen, and something warm in case the wind picks up, which happens often near the water even on sunny days. A trash bag is a must, especially on the lagoon shore since it's a protected area: nothing gets left behind.
