The Intendencia de Maldonado, the departmental executive of the department where José Ignacio sits, has enacted Decree No. 4123/2026, passed unanimously by the departmental legislature, which makes March 1 of every year the "Day of José Ignacio". The date recalls March 1, 1907, when surveyor Eugenio Saiz Martínez bought, by public deed, the 404 hectares that were later divided into the plots from which the town grew. The idea came from residents of the resort, and the Intendencia announced the decree on September 2, 2026. The first observance under the new rule falls on Monday, March 1, 2027.
Who decides what: the Junta and the Intendencia
Uruguay is divided into departments, and José Ignacio belongs to Maldonado. Under article 262 of the Constitution, each department is governed by a Junta Departamental, the departmental legislature, and an Intendente, who heads the Intendencia. According to the official statement, the decree has three articles and the Junta passed it unanimously: the first sets March 1 as the commemoration date, the second sends the text to the Intendencia for enactment and for the further steps before the Poder Legislativo towards its later official status, and the third declared the matter urgent. The Intendente then resolved to enact it, publish it and enter it in the departmental digest. The statement itself points to article 281 of the Uruguayan Constitution: decrees passed by a Junta Departamental only take effect once the Intendente enacts them. That is why this is news now and not when the vote took place.
Why March 1: the 1907 deed
The Intendencia explains that on March 1, 1907, surveyor Eugenio Saiz Martínez acquired 404 hectares by public deed, and that this date is regarded as the necessary first step towards the subdivision of the land that gave rise to the town. The surveyor's surname is still in the street names: there is a Camino Saiz Martínez at the entrance to José Ignacio, according to the portal's listings (the listing of the minimarket Autoservice Los Amigos gives that road as its address). The village was already marked by its lighthouse well before that deed: the portal's José Ignacio page recalls that the fishing hamlet grew around the lighthouse lit in 1877, thirty years earlier.
What it means if you are planning a visit
For now, it is a date on the calendar and nothing more. The statement fixes the commemoration but announces no events, programme or public holiday, so there is no reason to change travel plans. Keep the seasons in mind: this is the southern hemisphere, and March 1 is late summer, right after the December to February high season described on the portal's town page. There are usually fewer people about than in January; what stays open out of season goes through it listing by listing. Any commemorative activity, if one is organised, would be published by the Intendencia or by the Municipio de Garzón, the local council that José Ignacio belongs to; its listing on the portal has the contact. This article will be updated if that happens. The other cultural date in the area, confirmed but without a local programme published yet, is Heritage Day on October 3 and 4, 2026.
