If you are renting a house between José Ignacio and Laguna Garzón, this is where the food shopping happens. Inside the village, the supermarket is El Mercadito. At the entrance to the village, on Camino Saiz Martínez, the minimarket Autoservice Los Amigos states on its listing that it is open all year. Along Ruta 10 and in La Juanita you find Fresh Market, the organic store Mercado Verde, the greengrocer Frutería Lo de Gael and the corner-store café La Despensa. For the barbecue, the butcher is Black Angus. Seven places, all with a listing on Portal Garzón, sorted by area.

Two things are worth knowing before you set out. None of the portal's listings is a hypermarket or a big national chain: the offer is a network of small shops, some inside José Ignacio and others on Ruta 10 near La Juanita, and they complement each other. And this selection ends at La Juanita. Beyond it, in the Laguna Garzón area of the portal's shop directory, the only listing is La Virazón, a roadside stop a few steps from the circular bridge which according to its listing has a full supermarket and food to take away: the reference if you are staying at El Caracol or visiting the lagoon. On the road itself, the ANCAP fuel station in José Ignacio has a minimarket, is open 24 hours according to its listing and is the last station before the city of Rocha. How shopping works here, if you are new to Uruguay

A few words you will see on signs. An almacén is a small grocery store; an autoservice is a self-service minimarket; a verdulería or frutería sells fruit and vegetables; a carnicería is a butcher's; fiambres are cold cuts. Prices are in Uruguayan pesos, and none of the seven food shops on this list publishes prices on its listing, so the shopping budget is a question for each shop. Several listings publish opening hours. Only two shops, Autoservice Los Amigos and Frutería Lo de Gael, state that they open all year; the rest say nothing about the season, which in Uruguay runs opposite to the northern hemisphere: the portal's guide to the villages puts José Ignacio's high season in December to February, and the southern winter is the quiet time. El Mercadito (José Ignacio): the village supermarket

El Mercadito describes itself as the local supermarket of José Ignacio, stocked with a wide range of products for the stay. It is the convenient option if you are staying on the sand streets near the lighthouse and do not want to take the car for a small shop. Its listing publishes a daily opening time; treat it as a guide and confirm on WhatsApp outside the summer.

Fresh Market (José Ignacio and La Juanita): the food chain with two areas

Fresh Market is presented as a chain of food stores with local products, drinks of every kind, prepared meals and wine. Its listing places it in both José Ignacio and La Juanita, so it serves people staying in the village as well as those renting along Ruta 10. It is the place for a big, mixed shop: pantry, drinks and something ready to eat the same day. Which branch is open in which month is a question for the shop itself.

Autoservice Los Amigos (entrance to José Ignacio): fruit, meat and cold cuts without driving to La Barra

The minimarket on the corner of Camino Saiz Martínez and Batitúes, at the entrance to the village, is Autoservice Los Amigos. Its listing names fruit and vegetables, frozen food, meat, cold cuts, drinks and wine, and calls it the closest option for stocking up without driving to La Barra. The detail that matters in winter: it states that it is open all year. If you arrive along Ruta 10, it is the natural stop to fill the fridge before entering the village.

Mercado Verde (José Ignacio and La Juanita): organic, fermented and a growers' market

Mercado Verde has been running since 2010 and combines, according to its listing, a store of organic, vegan and gluten-free products with a kitchen serving healthy lunches. They make their own line of fermented and dehydrated foods, run an organic fruit and vegetable market with small rural producers, and ship nationwide. This is the answer when the shopping list has requirements: gluten-free, vegan or of known origin. The listing places it in José Ignacio and La Juanita; the exact address and market days are confirmed on WhatsApp.

Black Angus boutique de carnes (José Ignacio): the butcher for the asado

For the house barbecue, the listing of Black Angus boutique de carnes describes a José Ignacio butcher's specialising in Black Angus cuts. It is the only shop in this selection devoted to meat alone; Autoservice Los Amigos also lists meat and cold cuts, but here it is the whole trade. As with the rest of the list, confirm the published hours before going.

Frutería Lo de Gael (La Juanita): a greengrocer that delivers between La Barra and José Ignacio

On the corner of Las Toninas and Tabaré, in La Juanita, is Frutería Lo de Gael, in the area for more than fifteen years according to its listing. Two details make it useful for anyone settling in for a season: it delivers to homes between La Barra and José Ignacio, and it states that it is open all year. If the house is far from everything, this is the supplier that comes to the door; hours are on the listing.

La Despensa (Casa Grande, Ruta 10 km 182.5): a corner store and café on the road

La Despensa is a corner-store café inside the Casa Grande complex, on Ruta 10 at km 182.5, at the corner of Los Lobos. Its listing sits in the food and drink section because it also serves dishes of the day, but it belongs here for the store side: the stop to pick up what is missing at the house and have a coffee on the way. It shares the same stretch of road with Panadería José Ignacio, also at km 182.5, with sourdough bread and organic products.

Bread, pastries and wine to round off the shop

Three more stops cover what the grocery stores do not. For bread, besides the bakery at km 182.5, La Juanita has Al Pan, Pan, a sourdough bakery on República Oriental del Uruguay at the corner of Calle 11, with home delivery in the area; and on Ruta 10 at km 183.5 there is Medialunas Calentitas, the croissant-style pastries Uruguayans have for breakfast. For wine, the Bodega Garzón shop is inland, on Ruta 9 at km 175 in Pueblo Garzón, which the Maldonado departmental government places a little over 30 kilometres from José Ignacio; its listing notes that the online shop ships anywhere in Uruguay, so the bottles can reach the house without the drive.

Paying: pesos, cards, cash and what Tax Free does not cover

Two practical notes for visitors from abroad. First, cash: the listing of Redpagos de Varlix, on Ruta 10 at km 183.5, describes it as the only point of that network in the area, with cash withdrawals from BROU accounts, which is the state bank, and calls that, in its words, a useful detail where cash machines are scarce. Second, the Tax Free signs you may see in Uruguayan shops: according to the Dirección General Impositiva, the national tax office, the scheme refunds part of the VAT on clothing, leather goods, food, drinks and handicrafts bought by non-resident tourists, but only when those goods are to be used or consumed outside the country, and only on invoices above a minimum amount. Groceries you eat during your stay do not qualify, so there is nothing to claim on the weekly shop. Whether a shop takes foreign cards is a question for each shop from its listing.

How to choose, depending on where you stay

  • In José Ignacio village, without a car: El Mercadito for the general shop and Black Angus for meat
  • Arriving along Ruta 10 with the car: Autoservice Los Amigos at the entrance to the village, or Fresh Market
  • In a house in La Juanita: Frutería Lo de Gael with delivery, Fresh Market and La Despensa at km 182.5
  • Gluten-free, vegan or organic shopping: Mercado Verde, with a growers' market and shipping
  • Heading to the lagoon or El Caracol: La Virazón, the supermarket a few steps from the bridge; the ANCAP station in José Ignacio has a minimarket and is open 24 hours
  • Out of season: Autoservice Los Amigos and Lo de Gael state that they open all year; check the rest on WhatsApp

This list includes the food shops with a published listing on Portal Garzón in the José Ignacio and La Juanita areas, as long as the listing says at least where they are and what they sell. Restaurants, cafés without a grocery counter and any business without a listing were left out. So was the listing Deli y almacén José Ignacio, which describes the village's delis as a category (gourmet products, wine, cheese and picadas) without naming a specific business, and La Virazón, which lies outside José Ignacio and La Juanita and is mentioned above.
