If you are after a morning coffee or bread for the house between José Ignacio and Pueblo Garzón, the portal's food directory has nine listings whose Type field reads café, bakery or ice-cream parlour. Inside the village of José Ignacio are La Excusa, a specialty café with a garden, and Freddo, the ice-cream parlour of the Río de la Plata chain, on Eugenio Sainz Martínez street; on Route 10, before you reach the village, Panadería José Ignacio (km 182.5) and Medialunas Calentitas (km 183.5); in La Juanita, the sourdough bakery Al Pan, Pan and the bookshop café Rizoma; and in Pueblo Garzón, La Pulpería, in an old house with a fuchsia front. What follows is the editorial team's curation of those listings: where each place is, what it bakes or serves and which hours or season it has published. Menus and prices are not reproduced.
Before you go: seasons, pesos and what a medialuna is
Three things worth knowing if you are coming from the northern hemisphere. The calendar runs the other way: José Ignacio's high season is December to February, per the portal's page on the village, and the one listing on this page with a limited season, Café de Playa, was open in January and February. Prices on the listings are not reproduced here; Uruguay's currency is the Uruguayan peso, and each business quotes its own. And the vocabulary: a medialuna is the local crescent pastry, sold either "de grasa" (made with fat rather than butter) or "de manteca" (made with butter); the Medialunas Calentitas listing offers both. Dulce de leche, which Freddo names among its flavours, is the milk caramel of the Río de la Plata. Each listing on the portal has a WhatsApp button to reach the business.
What the directory shows: nine listings out of 57
The portal's food directory has 57 listings. In nine, the Type field names a café, a bakery or an ice-cream parlour: four say "Café" (La Excusa, Café de Playa, Rizoma and La Pulpería), two "Bakery" (Panadería José Ignacio and Al Pan, Pan), one "Café / Bakery" (Medialunas Calentitas), one "General store / Café" (La Despensa) and one "Ice cream shop" (Freddo); the count is made on the Type field of the Spanish listings, with the labels given here as the English listings show them. By town, six are in José Ignacio, two in La Juanita and one in Pueblo Garzón; none gives an address on the Rocha side of the lagoon. Only three publish concrete hours (Panadería José Ignacio, Café de Playa and Rizoma); Al Pan, Pan says to ask, and the rest have no hours field. Just one, Al Pan, Pan, declares home delivery. Of the 57 food listings, four use the phrase "all year round", and the only café among them is La Pulpería. Crêpas, a crêperie whose listing gives only "José Ignacio" as its location, is typed as a restaurant and so stays out of the count, but it appears below for what it serves.
Reading Route 10 by kilometre marker
Three of the nine (the bakery, the medialuna shop and La Despensa) give their address as a kilometre on Route 10, which is how the whole area is organised. The markers increase eastwards, from Punta del Este (some 40 km to the west, per the portal's José Ignacio page) towards the lagoon. The portal's page on La Juanita explains that the businesses listed there give addresses between kilometres 181 and 183.5, and that the village of José Ignacio starts at 185. So the bakery at km 182.5 and the medialuna shop at km 183.5 sit on the stretch you drive through before the village, not among the houses by the lighthouse. If a taxi or a map takes you to the village centre, you have gone past them.
Panadería José Ignacio (Route 10, km 182.5)
A bakery with a café on Route 10 at km 182.5. Its listing describes an organic bakery working with sourdough: croissants and focaccias come out of the oven, along with tarts and sandwiches. It does breakfast and a light lunch, and what matters most for this selection is what you carry home, bread and viennoiserie, by its own account. It is the only one of the nine counted listings to publish daily hours with no season attached: 8 to 19, every day (Crêpas, outside the count, publishes hours too). Sharing km 182.5, in the Casa Grande complex on the corner of Los Lobos, is La Despensa, a grocery and café with a patio whose listing runs from milanesas and sandwiches to salads and a dish of the day. More on the Panadería José Ignacio listing.
Medialunas Calentitas (Route 10, km 183.5)
One kilometre on, at km 183.5, is the local branch of Medialunas Calentitas, the medialuna chain that bills itself as "las originales de Punta del Este". According to its listing it is one of the chain's three outlets in the east, alongside La Barra and Solanas, and sells medialunas straight from the oven, "de grasa" or "de manteca", with coffee for the road or by the dozen to take away. The listing types it as "Café / Bakery" and publishes no hours; ask through the Medialunas Calentitas listing. It is the last listing of this kind before the village: none gives an address between km 183.5 and km 185.
La Excusa Café & Restó (village of José Ignacio)
Inside the village, La Excusa is the only café listing that describes morning, afternoon and night. In the morning, the listing says, it is a café: specialty coffee, pastries, breakfast. In the afternoon it is a stop for a snack. At night it changes character and becomes a bar, with pizzas from a wood-fired oven, drinks and live music in an open-air garden. Neither hours nor a street are published (the location simply reads "village of José Ignacio"), and the listing sends you to its Instagram for the music schedule and current hours. Contact through the La Excusa listing.
Café de Playa (José Ignacio, summer only)
This is the summer café of Panadería José Ignacio, which runs it in the old premises of the Carnicería Manolo according to both listings; the Café de Playa listing places it on the corner of Las Golondrinas and Los Cisnes. Its listing describes specialty coffee with lunches, wifi and pets welcome, and adds a beach kit on loan for those heading down to Playa Brava. It is the only listing in the selection with a limited season: it was open in January and February 2026, every day from 8 to 20, and the listing presents it as a seasonal venture. Outside those months, the bakery's café is the one on Route 10. Details on the Café de Playa listing.
Freddo (village of José Ignacio)
Freddo's José Ignacio shop is on Eugenio Sainz Martínez street, within the village. The listing names three families of ice cream, dulce de leche, creams and fruit, plus alfajores and packaged goods for taking away. No hours or prices are published; both are a question for the Freddo listing. Also listed in José Ignacio, with no street published, is Crêpas, with sweet and savoury crêpes for breakfast, a snack or dessert, and the longest hours among the listings on this page that publish any: Monday to Sunday from 10 in the morning to 1 at night.
Al Pan, Pan (La Juanita)
In La Juanita the sourdough bakery is at República Oriental del Uruguay 1189, corner of Calle 11. According to the bakery itself it makes slow-fermented breads and croissants, adds pizzas at weekends and delivers to homes in the area: it is the only one of the nine listings to declare delivery, which matters for a rented house in La Juanita or José Ignacio. Hours are not published ("ask"), so orders are arranged through the Al Pan, Pan listing.
Rizoma (La Juanita)
Rizoma is a café with a bookshop, a ceramics workshop and a four-room guesthouse among the pines of La Juanita. According to its listing it is a family project that opened at the end of 2020, and its bookshop holds more than 15,000 titles. It is the only listing in the selection to publish off-season hours: Friday to Sunday from 9 to 18:30, with a note to confirm on its Instagram; in the busy months, the listing says, it extends its hours and adds a cultural programme. The street is not published. More on the Rizoma listing.
La Pulpería (Pueblo Garzón)
A little over 30 kilometres from José Ignacio, according to the Intendencia de Maldonado (the departmental government), and less than an hour from the coast, according to the portal's page on Pueblo Garzón, La Pulpería is the only café with a listing in the village. It occupies a restored house from the late 1800s with a fuchsia front; the La Casa de las Hermanas listing places it facing the main square. According to the listing it was opened by American Amanda Dean with natural drinks, home-made pastries and vegetarian sandwiches, plus a guesthouse on the same property, and it sets out to keep a meeting place open all year round: it is the only café in the directory to use that phrase. Inside it also houses La Casa de las Hermanas, a shop selling art and design objects by South American makers, with its own listing under shops. Hours through the La Pulpería listing.
Off season: what the listings actually say
Outside the December-to-February high season that the portal's José Ignacio page describes, only three of these listings give you something to go on without asking: the daily 8-to-19 hours of Panadería José Ignacio, Rizoma's Friday-to-Sunday off-season hours, and La Pulpería's declared aim of opening all year. The others publish no hours, so message the listing before driving out, especially to La Juanita or Garzón. For families, the portal's piece on an afternoon snack with kids arranges several of these same stops as an outing.

How we chose
We started from the food directory listings whose Type field names a café, a bakery or an ice-cream parlour: nine. Eight have a section of their own; La Despensa, more grocery and lunch spot than café, is mentioned alongside the bakery it shares a kilometre with, and Crêpas, typed as a restaurant, alongside Freddo. The order follows Route 10 from west to east and then the villages. Neither ranking nor review: the portal does not rate the coffee or the bread, and menus and prices stay on each listing. No business paid to appear in this selection; the portal currently sells no placements in its guides, and if it ever did, they would be labelled here as sponsored.

Every address, opening time and season comes from what the relevant listing publishes, without confirmation by the portal with the business: ask through the listing's contact before setting out.
