Is there a beach without waves for very young kids near José Ignacio? Yes: La Playita at El Caracol, on Laguna Garzón, on the Rocha side. It is a freshwater beach with calm water and a sandy bottom so shallow that you can stand almost anywhere on the lagoon, with no currents and no surf. It sits on Route 10 about three kilometers past the circular bridge, and it is free and open all year round. For families with babies and kids who cannot swim yet, it is the quietest alternative to the area's ocean beaches.
What to do
First, the obvious: water. The shore is shallow and slopes in gently, so the youngest kids splash around knee-deep while the adults stay two steps away. The sand is good for castles and collecting shells, and when the wind blows it is a perfect spot for flying kites, with the whole open lagoon in front of you. Two operators are based right on the beach: Discover Laguna Garzón rents double kayaks, SUP boards and bikes and runs boat trips under the bridge, and Ecoturismo Laguna Garzón offers guided trails and stargazing nights. The other attraction is the birdlife: the lagoon is a protected area and from the shore you can see black-necked swans, herons and, with luck, flamingos. A sign on the beach showing the local wildlife helps put names to them. And at the end of the day La Playita is the best sunset spot on the whole Rocha shore: the sun drops behind the bridge and the sand bar.
Where
La Playita is in El Caracol, on the Rocha shore of Laguna Garzón. Coming from José Ignacio on Route 10 you cross the circular bridge and, about three kilometers further on, near kilometer 193, turn left onto a dirt track that runs down to the shore; the operators use it as their meeting point and there is room to leave the car near the beach. It is the resort's lagoon beach: the ocean beaches of El Caracol, Costa Bonita and El Bonete, on the other side of the road, face the open sea, with waves and deep water, better for walking than for bathing kids. When
The lagoon warms up earlier than the sea, so the bathing season with kids runs from December to March, with January and February the most comfortable months. In summer go early or after 4 pm, because there is no natural shade on the shore. Out of season the beach is still a great spot for picnics, birds and sunsets, even if the water no longer invites a swim. Important: the official lifeguard listings for the Rocha department do not include any post at El Caracol, so watching the kids is always up to the adults, at any time of year. Tips for going with kids
Umbrella or beach tent, sunscreen and water for everyone: the shore is open and the sun bounces off the water. Even with a shallow bottom, kids who cannot swim wear a life vest or float and stay in sight at all times; if you rent a kayak, vests are compulsory for everyone. The lagoon has been a protected area since 2014: no camping, no fires, no vehicles on the dunes, and all rubbish goes back with you.
