If the plan is a drink while the sun goes down, in José Ignacio the beach for it is the Mansa: that is where you find Zodíaco, the Bahía Vik bistro, and the beach bar La Choza de Mar, with DJs at sunset in season. On the Brava, El Chiringo keeps the beach day going until 8 pm. This selection brings together eight places with a listing on the portal, spread between the peninsula, the lagoon shore and the Garzón vineyards, ordered from the Mansa towards the lagoon, with what each listing says about where it is and when it opens.
Visiting from abroad: reversed seasons and the ride back
Seasons are reversed in Uruguay. Most places in this guide open for the southern summer, and their listings speak in local terms: El Chiringo runs from December to Semana Santa, Easter week; Bliss serves dinner from November to March; the Skyspace opens from October to April. Of the eight, only Zodíaco lists year-round opening, and even its listing says to check in winter. So a September or October trip, which is spring here, falls before most of this list opens; December to March is when most of it is running; the lodge at Garza Mora lists November and January to April, and Sunset en Garzón is a single date in November. The portal also counted its own directory: of its 57 food and drink listings, 12 mention the sunset in their text.
One more practical point: almost every plan here ends at night and some kilometres from where you are staying: Zodíaco and Garza Mora are about eight kilometres apart along Ruta 10, and the winery is off Ruta 9. If you will be drinking, the portal's guide to taxis and transfers lists the drivers who can take you home.
Mansa or Brava: which side the sun sets on
The portal's guide to choosing a beach puts it simply: the Brava faces east and the Mansa faces west. That is why the sun sets over the water on the Mansa, and why most of the beach bars in this list sit there. On the Brava the sunset happens over the land, with the ocean behind you. The lagoon adds a third option: across the bridge, in El Caracol, the terrace at Garza Mora looks out over the water.
Zodíaco (Bahía Vik, Ruta 10 km 182.5, Playa Mansa)
The Bahía Vik bistro, open to everyone, at Ruta 10 km 182.5 on the Mansa. Its listing describes contemporary cooking based on Uruguayan produce, a room with murals by Carlos Musso and the Mansa sunset as a backdrop. It opens for dinner, 7 pm to midnight, and every January hosts a pop-up by chef Mauro Colagreco that is worth booking ahead. Details in the Zodíaco listing.
La Susana (Playa Mansa, Bahía Vik area)
In the same Bahía Vik area as Zodíaco, inside the Bahía Vik area, La Susana is a beach restaurant with tables on the sand and bamboo pergolas. Its listing says it has been on the Mansa for more than ten years, serves seasonal Uruguayan cooking, grilled fish and the day's seafood, opens every night and recommends booking in season. No opening time is printed, so ask what time to arrive for the sunset through the La Susana listing.
Parador La Choza de Mar (Playa Mansa, calle Del Timonel)
A wood-and-thatch beach bar on the Mansa, below Posada del Faro, running since 2016. Its listing defines it by what happens at that hour: resident DJs and a live saxophone at sunset, with seafood, tapas and signature cocktails. Season hours run from noon to 10 pm, and to midnight on Saturdays; there is a pop-up beach shop inside. See the La Choza de Mar listing.
Bliss and James Turrell's Skyspace (Posada Ayana, Paseo del Marinero)
The option that does not depend on the beach. On the grounds of Posada Ayana stands Ta Khut, according to its listing the only work of its kind by James Turrell in South America: a room with an open roof where the piece shifts how you see the sky's light at dawn and dusk. It opens October to April, closes in winter, reopens at the end of October and sells tickets for the 2026-27 season on its website; the listing advises booking the sunset slot early. On the same grounds, Bliss has welcomed non-guests since December 2025, with Uruguayan cooking by the duo MAKA, influenced by Japanese and Nordic kitchens, for dinner from November to March. El Chiringo José Ignacio (Playa Brava, calle Ágata)
The only one on the Brava. It started as a tiny kiosk and, according to its listing, now receives around 500 people a day at the height of the season. Seafood and Mediterranean cooking, wood-oven empanadas, live music, yoga classes and events that run from midday to sunset. It opens daily 10 am to 8 pm in season and booking is advisable in the busy weeks of January. With an 8 pm close, it is an afternoon plan rather than a night out. Contact via the El Chiringo listing.
Osaka José Ignacio (Los Cisnes and Los Tordos)
The cocktail bar of the list. It is the summer outpost of the Lima-born Nikkei brand, where Los Cisnes meets Los Tordos, and its listing describes two bars: the Nikkei, for tiraditos, ceviches and nigiri, and the Kero, which is all about signature cocktails. The listing confirms the 2025/26 season with chef Cindy Higa; this summer's season is not in the listing yet, so check first. Bookings by WhatsApp or email, recommended in January. Garza Mora (El Caracol, Ruta 10 km 190.5, on the lagoon)
Across the bridge, in Rocha department: Turismo Rocha places El Caracol on the shore of Laguna Garzón, immediately after crossing the bridge. There, at Ruta 10 km 190.5, is the floating hotel Laguna Garzón Lodge, and Garza Mora is its restaurant, open to the public according to the portal's listing, serving breakfast and local cooking on a terrace facing the lagoon. On the Turismo Rocha page, with information supplied by the lodge itself, it is listed as open in January, February, March, April and November, and promoted for its sunrises and sunsets. Sunset en Garzón (Bodega Garzón, Ruta 9 km 175)
Inland, and once a year. With Sunset en Garzón, Bodega Garzón opens its wine-tourism season every November: according to the portal's listing, a wine bar, a finger-food menu by the chef and a live DJ while the sun goes down behind the hills, with limited places and advance booking. The winery announces each edition's date itself, so check its website before planning around it. This guide does not repeat prices: the last edition's are in the Sunset en Garzón listing, and current ones should be confirmed with the winery.

How we chose
We started from the 12 food and drink listings that mention the sunset and added two from the activities section built around that hour, the Skyspace and Sunset en Garzón. We kept those whose listing places them on the Mansa or the lagoon, those that put on something at that hour (music, a session, an event) and the Osaka cocktail bar. We left out Marismo, La Huella, Il Faro and Crepas, which mention the sunset in a single sentence without meeting any of those three conditions, and the generic listing for Brava beach clubs, which is not a single business. We also left out Botero, because its listing does not let us place it with certainty. There is no ranking: the order runs from the Mansa towards the lagoon and ends inland. The selection is made by Portal Garzón's editorial team and businesses do not pay to appear; none currently has a paid placement on the portal. Confirm hours, bookings and prices in each listing.
