If you have rented a house in José Ignacio and would rather not cook, the portal has four listings for a private chef or a caterer that name the village: two chefs who work from José Ignacio itself, Jaco Cocinando and Paula Segura Mallmann; the caterer RGC Ramallet Gourmet, based in Punta del Este; and the booking platform Take a Chef. All four declare José Ignacio. None names El Caracol or Pueblo Garzón, so if your house is across the bridge, put the address in your first message. This is an editorial selection: it tells you what each listing declares, where each is based and how bookings work, and it reproduces neither menus nor prices.

Before you book from abroad: season, currency and WhatsApp

Three things a visitor from the northern hemisphere tends to get wrong. First, the calendar: Uruguay's summer runs opposite to Europe's and North America's, and the portal's page on José Ignacio puts the village's high season in December to February. RGC's listing, for its part, sells the at-home chef as the way to avoid depending on a table in January, the middle of that season. Second, the money: Uruguay's currency is the Uruguayan peso; this page does not reproduce prices, and each provider quotes its own. Third, the channel: every listing in the portal's services and food directories connects you to the business through WhatsApp, and RGC says it answers quotes by form or WhatsApp within 48 hours, which is what lets you settle the dinner before you land.

What the directory shows: four chef listings out of 140

The portal's services directory has 83 listings and its food directory 57. In services, two carry the Type "Private chef" (Paula Segura Mallmann and Take a Chef) and one "Catering and private chef" (RGC). In food, a single listing is typed "Private chef": Jaco Cocinando. Four in total. By base, two work from the village of José Ignacio, one from Punta del Este, and the fourth is a platform whose declared coverage is Uruguay. Only two listings have a Coverage field: RGC names Punta del Este, Manantiales, La Barra, Maldonado and José Ignacio, and Take a Chef says "Uruguay, including the José Ignacio area". The other two are located in José Ignacio, with Jaco Cocinando adding that he cooks at your home. La Juanita appears once, in the text of Paula Segura Mallmann's listing, which speaks of someone renting a house in José Ignacio or La Juanita.

Jaco Cocinando (José Ignacio, at your home)

Behind the name is José Alejandro Reyes, a cook and pastry chef who trained in Venezuela and Argentina and has spent more than a decade in the trade. Two stops on his CV, as his listing tells it, explain the style: a stint in 2013 at Martín Berasategui's restaurant in Spain, and several years in the kitchen of Parador La Huella, right here in José Ignacio. The cooking is Latin and Mediterranean. What he promises is an end-to-end service: the menu is agreed with whoever books, he brings the ingredients himself, everything is made on the spot and the kitchen is left clean afterwards; allergies and preferences are taken into account if you flag them. He works every day, by prior booking, for lunches, dinners and events, and date, place and menu are fixed when you reserve. His is the only one of the four listings filed under food rather than services. The five menu proposals he publishes are on the Jaco Cocinando listing.

Paula Segura Mallmann (José Ignacio and Buenos Aires)

She works out of two places, José Ignacio and Buenos Aires, and describes her cooking as healthy and organic, built around local, seasonal produce. Her listing runs through the occasions she covers: breakfast and lunch, tea and cocktails, dinner, brunch and parties. Dietary restrictions or allergies at the table are catered for. Hers is also the only listing that mentions La Juanita: the example it gives is someone who has rented a house in José Ignacio or in La Juanita and wants a memorable dinner without having to go out and book a table. There is no coverage field, so for a house on the lagoon or in Garzón you ask about reach from the Paula Segura Mallmann listing.

RGC Ramallet Gourmet Company (based in Punta del Este)

The only catering company of the four, and the only one with no declared base in José Ignacio: it works out of Punta del Este. Its service zones, per the listing, are five: Punta del Este, Manantiales, La Barra, Maldonado and José Ignacio. The range of formats is wide, from grill and asado to paellas, risottos, tapas, pizzas and finger food, plus a mobile bar for parties. For José Ignacio, the listing itself leads with the at-home chef: a several-course dinner served at the house, so that you do not depend on finding a table in January. Quotes are requested by form or WhatsApp, and the listing promises an answer within 48 hours, which is what lets you settle the plan from abroad. It names birthdays, small weddings and dinners among friends; for anything bigger, the selection of wedding and event planners covers who organises it. Contact through the RGC listing.

Take a Chef Uruguay (platform)

Here you are not hiring a person but a platform: Take a Chef matches travellers and families with private chefs who cook at the client's house. The circuit its listing describes has three steps: pick a menu, adjust it to your group, and the assigned chef handles the shopping, the cooking, table service and tidying the kitchen afterwards. Two caveats the listing itself raises, and which set it apart from booking a named cook: which chefs are available depends on who is registered for that date, so it pays to book early, and the price moves with the menu and the head count. Declared coverage: Uruguay, including the José Ignacio area. More on the Take a Chef Uruguay listing.

If your house is in La Juanita, on the lagoon or across the bridge in Rocha

"José Ignacio" on a rental site can mean a stretch of coast much longer than the village. La Juanita is the settlement on Route 10 at the approach to the village; the lagoon lies further east, and crossing the circular bridge takes you from the department of Maldonado into Rocha (the bridge guide has the detail). El Caracol, according to Turismo Rocha, begins immediately after you cross it. None of the four chef listings names the lagoon, El Caracol or Pueblo Garzón, and only Paula Segura Mallmann's text mentions La Juanita. That does not mean they will not come; it means the listing does not say so, and the exact address belongs in your first message.

For those houses there is a plan B with a listing. Of the portal's 57 food listings, only three declare delivery, and all three sit in La Juanita. La Taba Inn is a grill and pizzeria on Av. Héctor Soria that declares year-round opening and works three ways: eat in, take away or have it delivered. Flama bakes Neapolitan pizza in a wood-fired oven on República Argentina street and opens nightly from 8:00 pm to 11:30 pm, with tables, collection and delivery. And Al Pan, Pan, a sourdough bakery, delivers around the area, handy for the houses of La Juanita and José Ignacio, and adds pizzas at weekends. On the lagoon side, the parador La Virazón, steps from the bridge, has a supermarket and food to take away, Monday to Sunday from 9 am to 6 pm. And to cook with your own ingredients, the selection of grocers, markets and greengrocers says who delivers.

There is a third route for anyone who wants everything handled: Intro Concierge. Its listing presents it as the country's first concierge company, fifteen years in the business, and among the things it does is find the villa and have it ready, private chef and butler included, before the client lands. It is not a chef: it is the company that hires one for you, along with the house.

How we chose

We started from the portal's listings whose Type field reads "Private chef" or "Catering and private chef", in both the services and the food directories. All four stayed in: each declares where it works from and how far its service reaches, which is what this page compares. The order runs from those working out of José Ignacio to the nationwide platform. Intro Concierge and the delivery listings are mentioned as alternatives, without a section of their own. It is not a ranking, and menus and prices are left out on purpose: they belong on each listing. The list is drawn up by the editorial team with nothing in return: none of these businesses paid to be here, and the portal, to date, offers no paid placements.
